How To: Setup Alert Profiles

Do you want an email notification when the Library obtains a new book in your favourite series? By a specific author? Or subject area? The Library Catalogue has Alert Profiles. These Alert Profiles allow you to decide which books, authors or subjects you want to be notified of when the Library acquires them.
Alert Profiles are quick and easy to setup. So easy in fact they can be explained in this quick guide!

Here’s how:
  1. Go to catalogue.mrl.nsw.gov.au (alternatively go to www.mrl.nsw.gov.au and click on “Update my details”)
  2. Log in using the Borrower Number (ID) on your library card (you will find this under the barcode) and your PIN. If you don’t currently have a PIN or are unsure of your PIN please visit your local branch.
  3. You will be directed to a page titled “My Details”. Click on the “New Alert Profile” tab and you will be given a page that has a range of drop down boxes and text fields.
  4. Using the drop down boxes on the left select the field you would like to search on. In the corresponding text box type the search criteria. Eg. Chose “Author” and type an author you would like to receive titles from.
  5. Use the “Language” option if you would like to specify a language. If this is left blank, it will default to all languages.
  6. The next option is “Location”. If you only want notifications on books available at your local branch, you can select that branch.
  7. “Collection” gives you the option of chosing only titles from a specific area of the Collection. Eg. Only receiving Adult Fiction titles, or only Large Print.
  8. The final option in the Search Profile is for “Material” or which format your item will come in. If left blank, it will default to all.
  9. In Step 2 hit the “Search” button to test your search, this will show what is already available through Macquarie Regional Library with the criteria you have selected.
  10. Setting the Alert Frequency allows you to determine when your search will be run. If you would like the system to search itself every day, then select “Daily”. Please note you will only receive the notification once, not daily.
  11. “Assign an Expiry Date” allows you to chose when the alerts will stop being sent.
  12. Lastly, add a description so that you can easily identify this Alert Profile in future.
  13. Press the “Save” button and log out of the system.
  14. An email will be sent to you when an item fitting your criteria is obtained.
